Anatomy Of The Eye

---------------------------------

The Precious Gift Of God, The Eye Is Such A Wonderful Structure Which Has Many Parts Functioning In A Synchronized Manner To Provide Us With Good Vision. The Eye Very Much Resembles Like A Camera. The Image Of The Object That Is Focussed Upon Is Inverted On The Film Of The Eye, The Retina And The Signals Pass To  The Brain Which Reads The Image As Erect

Know About Your Eyes
---------------------------------------

  1. Eyelids: The Eye Is Covered By The Eyelids Which Protect The Outer Part Of The Eye
  2. Sclera:  The White Part Of The Eye Is Called The Sclera Which Is Composed Of Tough, Fibrous Tissue That  Protects The Inner Working Of The Eye
  3. Cornea: The Eye Has A Watch Glass, A Transparent Window Called The Cornea Which Allows The Light To Enter Into The Eye
  4. Aqueous Humour: Aqueous Humour Is A Fluid Which Flows Between The Cornea And The Lens
  5. Iris: A Diaphragm Called The Iris Controls The Amount Of Light Entering The Eye
  6. Pupil: The Iris Has A Small Opening Or Aperture In The Center Called The Pupil Which Dilates And Constricts According To The External Light
  7. Lens: The Lens Is A Transparent Structure Situated Behind The Iris And Is Suspended By Suspensory Ligaments
  8. Vitreous Humour: The Inner Segment Of The Eye Has A Gel Substance Called Vitreous Humour Situated Between The Lens And The Retina Which Forms The Shape And Contour Of The Eye
  9. Choroid: Choroid Is A Pigmented Structure Forming One Of The Coats Of The Eyeball
  10. Retina: The Retina Is Athin Light Sensitive  Layer Forming The Inner Coat Of The Eyeball
  11. Optic Disc: The Optic Nerve Is Seen As A Small Optic Disk In The Back Of The Eye Which Transmits Impulses From The Retina To The Brain And The Image Is Processed There
  12. Macula: The Center Of The Retina Is Called The Macula Which Is A Sensitive Part For Good Vision
  13. Extra Ocular Muscles: These Are Six Muscles Surrounding The Eye Which Are Helpful In Moving The Eye In All Directions

Diseases :
---------------------

All The Eye Problem Should Be Given  Proper Attention And Checked With The Doctor Immediately. The Following Is A List Of Common Eye Disorder / Diseases

A) Refractive Error: The Most Common Vision Disorder Are Refractive Errors Specifically Nearsightedness, Farsightedness And Astigmatism. In Each Case The  Eye Does Not Refract The Incoming Light Properly So The Image Is Blurred

Type Of Refractive Errors

  1. Emmetropia
  2. Hyperopia Or Farsightedness
  3. Astigmatism
  4. Presbyopia

B) Cataract: A Clouding Of The Lens In The Eye

As Light Passes Through The Cataractous Lens It Gets Diffused Or Scattered Resulting In Blurred Or Defocussed Vision

The Rate Of Progression Of Cataract Is Unpredictable.

Some Cataract Worsen Significantly Within Few Weeks

The Process Of Ageing Continues Throughout Life. As A Result The Lens In Our Eye Is Also Ageing

Causes: Ageing, Radiation, Exposure To Uv, Smoking, Alcohol, Steroids, Diabetes, Trauma I Injury To The Eye Etc.

Symptoms: Cloudy Or Blurry Vision, Difficulty In Reading, Faded Colours, Poor Night Vision, Problems With Light Including Headlights That Seem Too Bright, Glare From Lamps Or Bright Sunlight Or A Halo Around Lights, Double Or Multiple Vision

Treatment: Surgery Is The Only Treatment Option

C) Glaucoma:  A Condition In Which Pressure Inside The Eye( Intra Ocular Pressure ) Is So High That It Causes Damage To The Retinal Nerve Fibres. The Intra Ocular Pressure Is Maintained By Fluid Circulating In The Eye Called The Aqueous Humour. When The Circulation Gets Blocked Fluid Starts Accumulating In The  Eye. As The Fluid Builds Up It Begins To Exert Pressure Inside The Eye And Damages The Eye Structures. In The Beginning Stage Glaucoma Starts Affecting The Peripheral Field Of Vision. Without Treatment Glaucoma Can Cause Total, Permanent Blindness  Within A Few Years

D) Diabetic Retinopathy: Diabetic Retinopathy Is Caused By Damage To Blood Vessels Of The Retina Resulting In Irreversible Lossof Vision

Fluctuation In Sugar Level Has A Great Impact In Affecting The Blood Vessels Of The Eye. Diabetic Patients Are At Higher Risk Of Developing The Disease

Awareness : Worldwide About 40 Million People Are Blind And 120 Million People Have Visual Disabilities. This Number Increases Steadily In Proportion To Population Growth And Ageing Factor. Two Thirds Of All Blindness Is Avoidable Either By Prevention Or Treatment. The First Step To Effective Prevention And Treatment Of Visual Disabilities Is People Being Aware Of Eye Care, Eye Disorders And Treatment Options
